Pond Conversion

Shrubbery in a bed of gravel landscaping

Everyone thought I was crazy to attempt this project. The pond had existed for many, many years. So the soil was very compacted, completely anaerobic, and black. My crew asked me multiple times if they really should be planting all those plants because there was no way they could survive.

I selected all native plants, focusing on ones that could handle some saturation since we did not alter the shape of the pond - I assumed some water would collect in it during winter rain storms. I did not remove the existing pond plumbing, and 3 times during the project the system malfunctioned resulting in the pond being filled half full with water, and all the plants survived! Two years later the plants were nearing mature size and thriving, and it was awarded best small design / build by CLCA.
